Those who have completed studies in Australia, and are still in Australia, may be able to apply for a visa to remain in Australia, known as the Graduate visa. These are issued anywhere from 1.5 - 4 years, and provide full work rights for successful applicants. Graduate visas are a great way to obtain valuable Australian work experience. They also give an applicant more time in Australia to find a potential employment sponsor and are a great pathway to permanent residence for those who have completed studies in Australia. The general requirements include:
- IELTS 6.0 in all four test areas (or equivalent)
- Health insurance
- To meet the Australian Study Requirement.
Graduate Work Stream
This stream is available to people who meet the above requirements, and have completed one or more degrees, diplomas or trade qualifications that are closely related to an occupation on the Skilled Occupations List. Graduates also need to have a positive skills assessment (known as a 'Provisional' or '485' skills assessment in their nominated occupation. Successful applicants will receive a visa for 1.5 years.
Post Study Work Stream
This stream is available for those who applied for their first student visa after November 2011. All graduates of Australian universities who meet the Australian Study Requirement are eligible to apply. The length of visa you will be eligible for depends on the type of course you studied, as follows:
- Bachelors degree & Masters by coursework: 2 year visa
- Masters by Research: 3 year visa
- PhD: 4 year visa
